How can an EDM system help to keep a business running?

In April 2010 the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted and threw many parts of the world into a state of chaos.
The major problem was that planes were unable to fly and businesses which rely on the global supply chain, particularly those in manufacturing, ran out of vital components. Another equally important issue was that key members of staff who had been on vacation or on an overseas business trip were stranded for days and even weeks in some cases.
Some of these people may have had vital business information with them, others may have had it saved in a folder ‘somewhere’ on their PC in the office which no-one could access. The impact this could have on any business is a serious matter and like all business continuity problems, needs to be addressed.
A simple but effective solution is for a company to implement an electronic document management strategy which would provide a central repository for all company information. This would enable data to be shared by personnel who need to access it, leading to faster query resolution, improved customer satisfaction and better cash flow. It would also mean that the data can be viewed at any time, anywhere in the world and would eliminate the problem of ‘personal ownership’.
