Why has ISO produced two draft standards on a Management System for Records?

by (comments: 0)

There are two new standards out for public consultation which relate to archives/records management:

ISO/DIS 30300 Management System for Records – Fundamentals and vocabulary
ISO/DIS 30301 Management System for Records – Requirements

The reason these standards have been developed is to impress upon senior management, the importance of good records management and to encourage them to provide leadership, funding and resources which are required for the implementation of effective records management procedures.

The MSR standards provide an enterprise wide strategic approach to enable management to put in place the correct framework for records management based on international best practice. As the standards are largely intended for managers, the language used is easily understandable and not the same as that used for records professionals. Having said that, they would also be useful for risk managers and auditors who have an interest in the transparency and accountability of business.
